Paphiopedilum Sanderianum seedling with brown spots on leaves
 

Hello,

I've bought a Paph. Sanderianum seedling (5") and got it last week, put it into my little green house with humidity about 60% and temperature around 25° Celsius (77° Fahrenheit). Watered with RO water and orchid fertilizer up to 150 µS.
Today noticed these brown spots on leaves and I'm sure they were not so strong visible at the time I got the plant. Will make photos periodically to observe if they will change over time. And on the left leaf it has impressed marks - is this normal? Have Paphs other species but without such 'things' on their leaves.

Anyone have an idea what could be the cause for this? Stress? Infection?

Looks like rot to me. I keep my Paphs at normal indoor room humidity with no problems. They seem to be pretty sensitive to moisture on the leaves especially overnight. Just my opinion for what it's worth. There are members here with way more experience than me who will post opinions I think.

Katzenhai2, I have a Paph lowii that I purchased several weeks ago with the same brown sort of rot thats in your pic. I thought it might have been too much sun, but I would be curious to know what it really is. I have several mottled leaved Paphs that do very well, and I was told the solid leaved Paph's like it brighter. I hope one of the more experienced Paph growers here can tell you what may have caused the brown spotting.

I would say both - stress can cause infections.
I don't worry about this kinda thing anymore, I've seen this in my own paphs. I use abit of rubbing alcohol on the damaged area's, usually that's the end of it.

Once I increase the air circulation and air exchange it clears up and new growth is healthier for it.
Yours really doesn't look to bad - Try the alcohol with a Q-tip a few times and see if you can't get it to clear up that way.

Thanks Gloria, I"ll give the alcohol a try. Will the damaged part of the leaf come back, or will it just be a blemish? It looks like the leaf is brown and sort of rotted all the way through.

No Bill, it'll still have that damaged look to it I'm afraid.
Yep I've seen spots go thru the leaf aswell - its' just a matter of trying to dry up the bad spots so they don't continue to spread out - they turn sorta yellowie.

I hope the alcohol works, so you don't have to go to something stronger.
As always check on those roots to make sure their in good shape.

Seems it was not a big problem, the Paph. Sand. grows and the spots haven't increased. So looks fine.

Glad to hear it! That's the way with Paphs, in my experience. Once you get on top of the problem they have a strong will to live and send out new fans of leaves. Now on to the blooms :)
