Tolumnia (Oncidium) veluntina

Here is an alternative to growing this Tolumnia species. Using these shabu shabu food strainers to hold this plant upright and allow for maximum air exposure, is not my idea. It is the idea from a Facebook member in the Tolumnia group.

The other photo is using a light grid and creating a plaque.

This method of growing Tolumnia is not for everyone. I live in the land of Winter approximately half a year!

I had trouble with my mine so I set it up using a basket, pellets and tied it to a mount. Whatever, it is working, new growth. I just mist it a couple times a day, grown inside. P.S. see the sponge mount to the left? I bought that at MOS orchid show, NOID on a sponge.

I'm not gonna lie, that shabu shabu strainer is too frigging cool! Great idea, glad it's working for you Matt. My plant is not very big, your plants on the light grid are huge! Nice mount.

I have a Tolumnia sylvestris "El Gato" AM/SFOS I've had a long time. It is very tiny and mounted on a wine cork. I understand these are reluctant bloomers and mine has never flowered. I spray it daily several times, it hangs above my kitchen sink in a south facing window. Flowers should be violet colored but I may never see them. Oh well, it's cute as #!%$

Here is the tiny, shy sylvestris

I posted this in a previous thread but here is my Tolumnia velutinum. This was a gift last Christmas and it has grown well. From Andy's, orchids on a stick not sponge LOL!

Wintergirl your Tolumnia looks great, it must like the basket. Interesting little noid on the sponge.

This species is incredibly unruly. I bought it in April 2017 at the Central Indiana Orchid Show (Indianapolis). I grew it as is but after two months, I decided to make some sense of the plant. I took it apart and ended up with these two mounts.
