Kool-Logs culture information

Hello, my friends

Consider a dry environment, let's say HR 20% and temps around 29ºC (85 F).
Consider also an orchid that requires humidity (let's say around 70%).

Using a kool-log, what would be your watering frequency?

You are also going to change seasonally.

I think the rate of evaporative cooling is going to change nearly every day, every season.

Ummm. What is a cool-log?

A a Kool Log is a porous, ceramic body that you fill with water, and mount plants on. The water weeps through the porous clay and evaporates, cooling the surface temperature.

Buy an unglazed flower pot, and silicone glue it, inverted, to a non-porous tray. Fill it though the hole in the pot bottom, and you now have the same concept in action.

I am wondering if by using them I'll be able to grow genus that are now restricted to me due to high summer temps and low HR.

Well... That's an opportunity to kill my first orchid!

Watering frequency for a Kool-Log will depend on conditions that affect evaporation, and the size of the Kool-Log. At minimum you would want to check the water level daily in the seasons you need cooling, but it might need it more than once a day in hot dry windy weather.

Wow. Interesting. I think I'll leave that two more experienced Growers. Thanks for the info Ray!

Kool-Logs

Just to be clear, the idea of a Kool-Log is that you don't have to spray water on the plant from the outside. Keeping the reservoir filled is supposed to keep the clay moist, and supply adequate water to the roots.

I don't know how they work in low humidity, warm climates.
