Maxillaria hennisiana
 

This is an appealing plant with plume like leaves and unusual round pseudobulbs. The plant grows outwards and will eventually cover the pot. The flowers emerge from the bulbs and create a blanket of flowers around the plant's base.

This is a plant from Eric Sauer, River Valley Orchids, Dayton, Ohio. He made these plants available at the International Phalaenopsis Alliance, Region 10 seminar held today 09/09/17 @ Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.

Are these Maxillarias you're showing plants that need to stay moist at all times?

These plants like moisture. The moss provides consistent moisture until it gets slightly dry, with the moss crispy. Then it should be watered again.

These also like to be on the cool side overnight. So it is important that with such moist conditions, the plants have a lot fresh moving air.

This is probably my fav Max! I gave up on trying to grow those cooler growing Max a few years back...my temps are too warm in the summer and the foliage would always end up looking awful. I can't stand spotty/ratty looking leaves.

If I ever do attempt them again though...this would one of the first I'd buy. Great purchase!

I'm going to grow this indoors in the Summer. If you decide you want another one, you are relatively close to River Valley Orchids.

Yea, Eric has spoken at many of our meetings over the years...great guy. And a Max expert! If I ever opt to try them again...he will def be the first person I contact. I'm sure he'll be one of our speakers in the not so distant future...who knows, maybe I'll be feeling impulsive that night.:D

Nice! It looks like this one will stay pretty small. I have a triloris that has a similar growth habit, but it is getting too big, and all it's blooms blasted last year. I may dispose of it and look for this one!

Nice blooms Matt! This is a interesting looking Maxillaria. The plant looks large with tiny blooms. Congratulations on the flowers!

It is a compact to small plant. I think it spreads out instead of up, unlike Max tenuifolia. I had written earlier it was slightly fragrant. It is night time now and the fragrance is more noticeable. The scent is the ubiquitous orchid scent.

Thank you Patty. From the base of each leaf/pseudobulb to the tip is 8”. Compared to my other orchids, it is a small or compact plant. The flowers are about 2” tall. They come from the bottom of the bulb.
