Can you help me guess the ID for this cymbidium sold as Valerie Absolonova? The plant looks like dayanum, but the flowers aren't quite right. No fragrance, and the flowers are 1 3/4 to 2 in tall. Thanks for your help!

It is not Valerie Absolonova (which has an upright spike with larger flowers). I have attached a photo of Valerie Absolonova.

Very true! I knew as soon as the spike started growing that it wasn't going to be Valerie Absolonova for that reason. I've seen a division of the same plant as mine on this forum called Akaka Falls, but it looks mislabelled to me.

I don't know much about Cym. dayanum, but could this be a dark colored form?

Pretty sure it isn't Akaka Falls though with hybrids it's possible since one parent may be favored in one plant and the other in another. In this one, the tracyanum parent shows up strongly in the lip http://orchidcentral.org/Images/Cymb...ka%20Falls.jpg and that is the case with photos from other sources (in Orchidwiz) as well.

I agree, and I think the source of my plants must just be chronically mislabelling it. I still think it's dayanum, but it looks more like Tavoy (dayanum x finlayssonianum) to me.

Do the flowers have the heavy substance that would come from finlaysonianum (or one of its relatives)?

Hmm. I'm not that familiar with cymbidiums, but I think the flower substance is comparable to my aloifolium's. Do you know how that might compare to finlaysonianum?

Pretty much the same as aloifolium. So this could be dayanum crossed with either of these.
