Secret Solution

Hello there,

I was at an orchid greenhouse today and picked up some fertilizer. It came with a bottle of this secret solution, that says to add 1 drop to an ounce of water and spray the leaves. It has nothing on what the contents are of this product. I am thinking I don't want to use it since I don't know what it is but wondered if anyone out there might have a thought of what it could be.

Thanks

I personally don't use things unless I know what's in them.

I have had people put things in my drink when I wasn't looking, but I'm a lot stronger than many people suspect. I wouldn't do that to my plants, either.

I avoid anything where the contents are not fully disclosed. This is the reason I don't use products like Superthrive.

Also, not much is absorbed through orchid leaves. Some plants can absorb a lot through the leaves, yes, but not much through orchid leaves.

Plants do not use their leaves to absorbed nutrients. For orchids, spraying on the leaves may cause rots. I only use the better gro orchid ferts. I make sure it does not contain urea. And it has micro nutrients as well as macros. I just grab a pinch and to mix it with my water and to spray on the roots and the medium once a week.

There is absolutely no reason to avoid urea in fertilizer. Much of the "avoid urea" argument is based on a lot of misinformation. There is scientific research that shows that urea is very effectively used by orchids.

Also, many plants do absorb nutrients through their leaves, though orchids with waxy-textured leaves probably do not absorb much through foliar feeding.

Me personally I use a nitrate nitrogen based fertilizer. When I asked the employee about spraying it on the leaves. I said aren't you supposed to spray the underside. And he said oh yeah I've heard that's where the stomatas are. Really didn't make me feel confident of this said product.
