The list of plants in s/h
I've been busy moving things into s/h. Here's my list:
Laeliocattleya Ken Stromsland 'Eric' (Arlene Marie x Hausermann's Pride) (have two of this one since I divided it) Miltassia Shelob ‘Red Spider’ Miltonia Echo Bay ‘Midnight Tears’ AM/AOS Oncidioda Charlesworthii ‘Mishima’ HCC/AOS Phalaenopsis Brother Coral x Ever Spring Pearl Phalaenopsis, unknown hybrid purple Phalaenopsis, unknown hybrid white Vaughnara Sir Walter Raleigh ‘Yellow Squirt’ These have been in s/h anywhere from 1 day to 1.5 months, and so far I've had no problems with them, and they're all growing great! |
Hi Scott,
I'm not doing the whole s/h thing but I did move almost all of mine into clear pots with either aliflor or prime agra and I am noticing a HUGE difference! These babies are lovin' it!!! I don't know if it's the pots, the medium or a combination of both but I'm sure glad I did it :D |
How often are you watering those PA plants Susanne? Not that FL and CO have much in common! :-)
|
We use the clear aircone pots none S/H and we love them. Since we have converted over our stock to them we have noticed faster and healthier growth.

They all get watered at least every 2 days, some of them get a little dose every day. All of my plants get heavily misted a few times a day too, because of the intensity of the heat and the sun. This is a picture of some new roots on my C. Penny Kuroda...they were not there yesterday!!!
|
Of note, I will eventually be moving most of the rest of my orchids over to s/h. Things that will not be making the move: vanda alliance plants, which are in hanging baskets sans media, and a brassavola nodosa in a hanging basket. other than that, I'm just waiting for the right timing to move things.

I have been thinking of trying the LECA in some form or another, but here's the thing: I can only deal with watering once a week, can't be any more than that, I have too many plants, and it's just little ol' me here working my butt off five days a week. So...would that mean I would need to do the s/h thing? Or does this stuff hold enough water to last a week? My plants are in an air conditioned condo, so it's not like they are out in intense sun and heat, but they do get a fair amount of light; I have big south facing windows. And I keep a fan running on them all the time. Any thoughts?

Water in S/H lasts a good week if not more. You should be fine.
I've got two Lc.'s in S/H and they are doing well. At first they got a little rot, but that was becuase I was doing it wrong. The worst one is still alive with a little shriveling (not too much), and the other had a bloom from June 26th till today, and now has 2 new growths!! I think they like it. |
I am with Tindo on that point.....my S/H need watering about 1x per week. These are under lights with good fan driven air movement.
I am using Prime-Agra and the particle size is very random with a mixture of larger and smaller pcs, is Leca more uniform in size? |

you should look at www.firstrays.com for his comparison of different LECA varieties--it's actually quite surprising that they're really not all the same. my s/h plants need watering anywhere from every 5-10 days. the smaller pots need it more often than the bigger ones. |
