Fungicide in the UK
I've got a bit of grey fungus/mold on the roots of a phalaenopsis, and I want to treat it with a fungicide. However, whilst everyone mentions "use a fungicide" all over the place when talking about orchids, it's nigh-impossible to find out which ones are suitable and in what dosage. :)
I can't use cinnamon, as the fungus is on the roots, and the cinnamon will dessicate the roots and cause more trouble, probably. A lot of people mention Physan 20, but it's no longer available for sale in the UK. I've heard some people say any fungicide suitable for roses is suitable for orchids - is that correct? If I get something like Bayer Fungus Fighter in it's pre-mixed spray form, can I use that - and can I use it directly, or do I need to dilute it? Recommendations please of brands and exact mix strength would be really appreciated. :) |
See if you can get Mancozeb. I find it to be
very effective and safe on orchids. |
I've used Bayer rose clear and fungus fighter on my orchids and haven't seen any negative effects.

Can you post a photo? Fungus doesn't usually grow on living Phal roots.

I've removed the end of the root which had the fungus now, and disposed of it. It was about 5-8mm of root covered with grey downy fungus.
|
The fungus-covered portion was probably already dead. The fungus was probably one that feeds on dead tissue. The fuzzy, hairy fungi on orchids are like that.
|
Interesting, thanks. It was definitely a living root - it was green where I cut the fungused part out, and still fleshy. If the tip had died, then there's the risk of the fungus spreading.
Anyway, back on topic - what brand fungicides do people in the UK use? |
