Vanda mounting

This is my first post on this board and the first orchids I own. My daughter bought me two Vandas to break the ice because I will admit I petrified of orchids. I actually owned two years ago as gifts and they totally died on me. I want to mount my beautiful Vandas to a palm tree I have in the back yard. I live in South Florida. What is the best way to mount these babies? Thanks for your suggestions. TERRIFIED new orchid owner

Hi Terrified Yams,

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

For information specific to your region, look up videos posted by Motes Orchids. They are in Homestead. They also have an excellent book, Florida Vanda Growing Month By Month.

The basic ideas are that most Vandas need some shade from Florida sun, and they need a lot of water.

Perhaps tie them onto the northeast side of your palm so they don't get afternoon sun. Put a little shade cloth over them for this first summer, and take it off when it cools down in the late fall. They will then be acclimated to higher light.

They need to be watered every single day it does not rain. They need regular fertilizing to bloom well.

If I can grow them in Phoenix, and jcec1 can grow them in west Scotland, you can grow them in south Florida.
