Orchids in a Vivarium/Terrarium??
2 Attachment(s)
So this might be an odd question but I feel like its worth considering.
I breed crested geckos, small, squishy, sticky toed cuties. Theyre from heavily planted areas and arboreal (think rainforest, humidity towards 70%, temps between 72-80F. My question is would orchids be a safe addition to their enclosure. They are in about a 120 gallon area thats well ventilated and heavily planted with all live plants (various ivys and canopy-esque type terrarium plants. I mist daily and monitor the substrate on the plants closely (as of now all the plants are potted and when they dry out (through the first inch+) I water directly. They max out in weight around 40-60 grams so they arent heavy enough to harm the blooms and wont eat them either as they are fruit eaters and have readily available 24.7. I also have a full spectrum light that runs about 10 hours a day that is about 2.5 ft from the bottom of the enclosure. So, back to my original question, would a Phal orchid be a good addition to this environment and would they thrive or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated as Im wanting to add more plant life to their enclosure. Ive added a picture of the two different enclosures I have, would either be ideal or would it be a death sentence for the Phal?? |
Phals do well in terraria under lights. So do a lot of other orchids. Many people take them out of the pots and mount them on branches. There is a Terrarium forum here on Orchid Board.
Soon you won't have room for the silk plants. |
Awesome, Ill definitely have to try some of my smaller Phals on the wood and see how it goes.
Thanks a ton ES, you're the best!! |

I decided to give it a go with some of my Phals that aren't currently in bloom (you'll see the one with the buds that wont go to bloom in the pics as well.).
They moved over quite nicely and the roots were much more massive then I thought. Here they are!! Any feedback is always appreciated :) |
