Cymbidium Pywacket
This is Pywacket 'Frank McNally'
Oddly I don't see any Pywacket posts/photos in this forum. Maybe I spelled it wrong. Well, anyway, I bought this plant in spike so can't take credit (except that I haven't killed it ) One spike has darker flowers, one has lighter flowers https://s26.postimg.org/4zxe2kgc9/pywacketfm_dark.jpg dark flower https://s26.postimg.org/gqbbjy94p/pywacketfm_dark2.jpgdark flower spike https://s26.postimg.org/wxd0m9qrd/pywacket_fmlight2.jpg light flowers |

I registered Pywacket, a cross made by Geyserland Orchids, 20 years ago in 1996. It was intended to be named after the cat in the Kim Novak movie, Bell, Book and Candle but was misspelled. Bob Harris of the Orchidpeople in Hawaii and a great fan of the movie, has given me grief over this for years! (I would attach a photo but after all this time on the site, I still cannot figure out how!)
Many of the cultivars floating around the Bay Area came from my collection originally. Frank McNally is one of my favorites as it can bloom with a darker green on the background than many of the others and have over 30 flowers on an inflorescence. That said, sunlight will dictate the intensity of color on the different cultivars. The more direct sun, the darker the markings will be. This cultivar was awarded a JR/CSA when it went Best Cym in show a couple of years ago at the POS show with 34 flowers on one inflorescence. |

I find the color difference interesting since the spikes originate inches apart and the spikes are a couple feet apart only. However, I bought it in spike, and time will tell if under my conditions the flowers are less different from each other. What about Pywacket 'Stirling', did that originate with you also? I have a much smaller plant of that variety, picked up at the GCCG auction earlier this year. I too had great difficulty posting photos to this site until I discovered postimage.org You just click the share icon and select "hotlink for forums" Here's how easy it is https://s26.postimg.org/lso20zt15/IMG_3306.jpg supposed erythraeum 'Paradise' This plant also has a good story, I bought it from our friends in Richmond, a year ago, it had a tag in it "Cym erythraeum 'Paradise' AM/AOS x self". Not a handwritten tag either - a printed one! Apparently that was incorrect, and Ken from Royale has suggested that it could be his cross of erythraeum x eburneum, it does smell very nice and I like it, even if it came to me under false pretenses :D |
Beautiful!
Don't worry, cats are not good spellers. |
Beautiful blooms and such a great story. Cym Lady I always wondered why you didn't show us your Cyms.

To answer your questions:
I originally had 6 seedlings in a compot from Frank McNally when he left Ca. I kept and named 4 and let the other two go. I do not know if Barry got the seedling he subsequently named 'Stirling' from one of those or bought one from Cal-Orchid. The erythraeum 'Paradise' is definitely mislabeled and it could well be an erythraeum hybrid of Kevin Hipkins of Royale Orchids. http://https://postimg.org/image/sncdu084d/ Thank you for the tip on posting photos. I will see if I can make it work. |
