Just bought a new flask, any info on Brassavola Nodosa Weavers Choice

I couldn't resist myself when the flask was on eBay for $20. I've never grown from a flask, but I'm optimistic that I can manage. I'm mostly curious if anyone has any information on the variety Brassavola Nodosa Weavers Choice. It says the plant is from a self and it is a 4N.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

I think what you have are seedlings from crossing the plant you mentioned with itself. The seedlings would be similar to their parent, but they will not be the same clone, and they would not be called by the same clonal name. To get an identical plant one needs to make a division or tissue culture of a plant.

4N means it has double the normal number of chromosomes. Usually selfing a 4N plant does produce 4N offspring.

I'm not sure if Weavers Choice is meant to be a cultivar name, since it is not in single quotes in the listing. I'm not familiar with Weavers Choice but I have seen references to Weaver's Strain before, implying a seed grown population from selected parent(s) - comments that it was large flowered and possibly 4N - and I have seen that name without quotes, with single quotes, and with double quotes. If you really want a better understanding of the particular plant that was selfed for the flask I think asking the seller is your best bet.

Thanks. I'm still waiting to hear back from the eBay seller. I wouldn't have bought them knowing nothing about the plants, but I couldn't pass it up for the money.

Well, they should definitely be Brassavola nodosa.

From the eBay seller:
"its a self of a 4n plant so bigger then normal.
google it."
Not the most helpful response since I'm mostly concerned as to what 'weavers choice' is. Oh well, at least I should have some amazingly scented blooms in a few years pending no mistakes.

Good luck and welcome to the board. I'll be waiting for updates.

If Weavers Choice is the same as Weaver's Strain then it should be a somewhat compact nodosa with flowers larger and flatter than average. I actually bought a flask myself. I think we can assume they will be average or better nodosa. I have purchased from them before and I expect to get very inexpensive healthy flasks that appear to be what is claimed, reliable for what they are, but they have never been high on my information and customer service lists.
