Bought a Sequential blooming Paphiopedilum without a name tag.
2 Attachment(s)
Good morning as you can see my name is Zoren. I'm very new to Orchid Board Forum, in fact this is my first 'thread'. I bought 2 sequential Paphiopedilum at the Tamiami Orchid Festival on sunday 1/15/17. Unfortunately I lost the venders card the names of the plant where on the card, so I can not get in touch with him. I'm hoping someone out there will be able to help me with a name. Only one is blooming the other is in bud, I will send a picture of the one in bloom. Thank all of you for your help in advance, waiting for help Zoren!! P.S. This may be a strange question, this Paphiopedilum (if it is aPaph) has no Slipper cup!!

The flower is deformed, missing the pouch, but this is definitely a sequential flowering Paph. New flowers should form about once a month or so, and will most likely be normal. These can be very satisfying to own because you may get many flowers from one spike over a period of months to years.
When you have them, pictures of normal flowers may be helpful, but it is always difficult to identify any hybrid with certainty, and especially in this group. Make sure to include full plant pictures as you did here, as well as the best full flower pics you can get, and a measurement of the plant and flower might also be helpful in identification. The list of vendors from the Tamiami festival should be available somewhere. Perhaps you would recognize it if you saw it, and be able to contact them. Good luck, and welcome to OB. |
I'm not sure about an ID. Your plant is definitely from the Paphiopedilum group called Cochlopetalum, beyond that, I'm not comfortable giving a more specific ID -- though it's probably got P. chamberlainianum in its background. It's also very possible that this is a hybrid, which would complicate ID even more.
Can't you look up the list of vendors that were at Tamiami and see if any of the names ring a bell? Then try to contact the vendor, including pics. If you can't figure out the exact vendor, there's no harm in emailing a few of them. The missing pouch might be a deformity, or it may have been manually removed -- either by accident or perhaps the vendor was going to breed with it, as they'll sometimes remove the pouch to make it easier to pollinate a flower. |
I would like to thank both PaphMadMan and MrHappyRoller for there help with identifying my Sequential Paphiopedilum. I sent a photo to a friend who grows and owns an Orchid nursey, he thinks it is a Glaucophyllum Hybrid (unknown mix). The vendor removed the pouch (someone damaged it), I purchased a second Paph it also has no name tag, when it blooms (in bud) we may be able to figure both plants out. I also purchased an other sequential paph with a name tag Paphiopedilum Primulinum. I will send a photo in a new thread I can't figure out how to send an attachment in a Quick Reply, so again Thank both of you, Zoren....

Great that you could find out the names of your Paphs. Not only are your Paphs sequential flowering, but the Phrag and the Psychopsis are too. You have set yourself up for flowers forever once they are all settled in and mature size. Just do not cut old spikes until they start to dry up on their own.
Just making sure you know the full registered name... Psychopsis Mariposa 'Green Valley'. |
PaphMadMan, I appreciate the heads up on the full registry name (when you are married to a Latino Women, they make sure you know what Mariposa means, no I don't speak Spanish). Maybe you can give me an another heads up, what are 'worm castings' and what do they do for orchids. Zoren...
