Can a Den Nobile stem rot? Help Please
 

2 different nobiles a standard and Virginalis

The first one...I think it is rot? this is one is outside and it has rained for most of the month.

The stem is turning brown/black and so it the stem next to it. and becoming soft and losing its leaves. Should I cut both off!

My other Nobile Virginalis seems too yellow and it not even uniform yellow it is sort of faintly mottled. Had to take the pix under halogen spot light so it hard to see. this one is indoors under two 23watt CFL? Could it be two much light?


These are the two that actually got be hooked with orchid mania so i REALLY want to save them.

I'm no expert, but the black cane on the first one does not look like a good thing. :hmm:

I cut off the cane :(( hopefully the cane next to it is ok. I'll keep a close eye on it it that goes soft I guess I'll have to cut it off as well.:((

Dump some regular store 3 % peroxcide on the stub then coat with cinnamon , keep the cut dry , watch the other one close it does not look good . The thing is you have to get ahead of the rot process or it will destroy the whole plant . Sorry Gin

I agree with Gin...

You have to treat it immediately to prevent it from infecting your mother plant. As for the removed stem, you can check it if it still has some good portions then try to remove the rotting part.
Who knows maybe you can produce a keiki out of it.

We always do that on our dends...specially on rainy seasons.

Hi all, I cut off the blackish sof/mushy cane, though blackisk on the outside it was dark green in the inside.

I have dosed it with copper sulphate fungicide, would you recommend that I cut off the other cane?
It was the one the softish cane grew out off?

The one next to it is lime green the good colour. I don't want it spreading:_(

If it was mine I think I would remove the other one better then losing the plant , you might peel off the covering to see it there is a color change part way up . Gin

If where you cut the rotten bulb is bright green with no invading dark patches, then I would not cut off another bulb. Do keep an eye on it though, in case the rot has infected it. I would, however, dry the plant out (ie. NO water) until it starts to shrivel a bit, then slowly reintroduce water. That way, any fungus that might be left will hopefully dissapear and your plant can resume business as normal. Back to your first post, the plant in the second pic looks really healthy to me. If there is some yellow mottling occuring, its just because the light intensity is high. If the leaves start to develop actual yellow spots, then you should move the plant a little farther away from the light source. Otherwise, it looks good to me!!
