Hi all,

This guy spends all his time on land. Weird for newt don't you think? As a consequence I see him maybe 1 time in every two months. So I figured I would take a pic when I saw him this morning and share it with you all.

I didn't want to disturb him, so I didn't take a belly pic, but his belly is fire red.

I have always loved amphibians. It makes me a little sad how humans are destroying their habitats and, now, their climate.

Salamanders were once very common in woodlands and near ponds but they are nearly impossible to find out of doors, now. I always loved the red efts.

We bought a few salamanders (fire belly?) once when the kids were small and kept them in a large, planted terrarium/aquarium. They were with us for many years.

I've noticed this drop in population size. I remember just 3 years ago walking in woodland trails and seeing so many I was afraid to step on them (Red-efts). Doubt things will get better in the near future. Not now anyway.

Oh how cool! Have you had the little guy long?

Tindomul 11-10-2016 05:58 PM

Funny you should ask. Yes, I know I had him in 2007. Maybe older than that.
