Dendrobium sonia

Hi all. I've recently been bitten by the orchid bug again and want to buy a Dendrobium sonia. I know it's common but I don't have any in my collection. I see them once in a while at the local grocery store but can't seem to find any for sale in the US online? Anyone know of a nursery I can order from? All I see online are sites for Thailand and India. I'm tempted to buy from Thailand. Anyone have experience doing that? How long does it take to get here and how much more does it cost than something here? Thanks! :)

Welcome!

Importing orchids legally to the US from another country is not easy because of the import paperwork required. I would keep looking in the US for the plant, or find something very similar that you like which is already available here.

Thanks. I haven't ordered orchids internationally before but I've ordered Siamese fighting fish from Thailand. You pay about twice as much because they have people here that they ship to and then you have to pay those people to ship to you. Thought it might be something similar.

There are some people that dedicate themselves to importing plants. You just have to find the right people. They do it legally too. Colombian orchid imports and Ecuagenera are two examples. I don't know what part of the world your orchid might be popular, but maybe it's worth a look at their websites. You never know.

I was at EFG Orchids a couple weeks ago, and saw what sure looked like a Sonia. I didn't go check out the plant, don't know if that is what it was, don't even know if it was tagged (they do have some NOIDs). You could ask them though. I do know that they import some plants from Thailand, so maybe it was, or they could get you one.
