Can botrytis be green ?
 

Hello!

This is my first time posting. I have had my phal from Trader Joe's for about a month.

I don't know much about plants so reading here has been so helpful. (Thanks to OrchidBoard, I learned that my recent bud blast was due to my fruit bowl too close to the orchid.)

Recently I noticed green spots on some blooms (See photo). I know it could be botrytis, but most descriptions describe it as black/brown spots. Can they be green?

The orchid is inside but I keep the windows open for a nice breeze (windows facing SE and NE). I have some lavender on the balcony that developed some green algae on top of the soil-- could that have jumped inside?

I don't believe I have been overwatering-- doing that 3 ice cubes / week thing until I get the hang of it.

Humidity in DC this past month perhaps was too high.

Do I need to cut off the two blooms with the spots?

I really doubt it's a disease.. Maybe insect damage.

Do a search for "ice cubes" here, and be prepared to learn why it's a mistake.

Unfortunately, the pictures don't give a very clear view of the spots. Of course, they are tiny and quite a challenge to photograph.

I have occasionally seen light thrips damage on white flowers (though not specifically orchids) show as greenish spots before they turn dark. Might happen with other small sucking insects too. Is there a puncture or small pit on the back side of the spots?

No, there are no punctures or small pits. I do have a Christmas cactus with a gnat issue, but I haven't seen any around the orchid which is set off by itself.

Ive had the same case in the same color of phal, its not something to worry about as long as it doesnt spread more than what you now apreciate, it is indeed caused by humidity in the atmosphere not the watering of the plant itself regarding roots of course; and yes, cold water is a bad for most plants

Now that autumn is coming in hopefully I will see less humidity and no more new spots.
