Pendant dendrobiums?
 

Can we talk about hanging dendrobiums 'upside down'? I think they look better, but worry about watering the flowers. What methods do you use?

I'll bump you but can not help. I have no mounts.

I dunk my D. unicum daily. I just dunk it more carefully when it has buds and/or blooms.

I have and am growing a number of upright growing Dens in a recumbent position.
They almost always want to try coming more upright. Sometimes they can't over come the weight of the PB, sometimes they can.
Assuming that you're growing indoors, follow the recommended watering regimen, don't water late in the day or at night. Keep good air circulation so that the flowers are dry before the cooler evening temps set in.

Mine are outdoors in a high rainfall climate. Continual night and day rains do not seem to affect the flowers adversely. Which leads me to think that good air circulation is more important than protecting them from cooler night temps.

What with all the naturally recumbent and pendant growing Dend, why try to force one that doesn't want to to do so?
Having said that, I do find myself often trying to encourage my upright growers into a more recumbent position.

Can you post a picture so I can see what you mean?

I've never heard anyone expound on this subject before.
But, to me what I'm about to say is trivially true from my experience and observations.
Anyone disagree?

When most people see a Dendrobium, it is usually in a pot that has been grown indoors: a greenhouse, or a home, by a grower or enthusiast.
When you purchase an orchid, it is nicely and neatly in a pot.
To conserve growing space they are neatly tied, clamped or whatever into a vertical position.
The more they are kept compact, the more you can get in to the your growing space.
Anything necessary for more orchids.
As a reformed inhome grower, I fully agree with that sentiment.
I've even seen pendant Dendrobiums tied into a vertical growth habit.
Den. pendulum is an example that sticks in my mind.

Orchids are not naturally neat, orderly, space saving growers.
But, they can be trained to be.
That is what the normal orchid enthusiast sees and thinks that's how they are.

While not a very good example yet, this is a group of a Den. nobile hybrid.

They are well into their second year after mounting here.
Some did bloom last spring, but the PBs are not yet as large as they will be in a year or a few.
Instead of mounting them on top of the trunk, I tied them to the side of it to encourage them to grow recumbent.

The planting I was given these from was growing very much like this group growing in a neighbor's yard.

There are several others around the area that are growing similarly.

Almost all of them are Yamamoto hybrids.
The two pictured here are.
Every Yamamoto Dendrobium you normally see for sale in a pot is neatly growing vertically.

Saw this this morning.
It made me thing of this thread.

Here is an example of a Dendrobium that is considered to be pendant,
but starts out growing vertically before the weight of its PBs pull them over into a pendant position.

I'm not sure if there is a list of pendant Den.'s anywhere.
But, I have been fascinated by the Dendrobium section Dendrobiums ever since starting to keep orchids. I have had many of them and many of them are pendant, or at least recumbent.
It'll take me a bit, but I'll make up a list of those that I have kept and either edit it into this post, or add it in another post.
While not all encompassing, it is not a very short list either.
