Wine corks for a mount

1 Attachment(s)
So this is the second mount I have done. I had a growing collection of wine corks so I used them to make a mount. The corks are attached together by threading wire through them and creating a brickwall layout. I then rolled it into a cylinder and closed the ends with champagne corks so it looks like a football. The inside is filled with coconut coir. When mounting the phal I worked to get as many roots as possible inside the cork ball. Afterwards I added sphag to the top as I wasn't sure how much water this would retain.

So will this work? If necessary I can remove the coir and use something else.

Neat idea. It will be interesting to see how long the interior sphag stays wet. There is air exposure from all sides, but that looks like a pretty good sized fistful of moss inside. It seems like you won't have to water as often as you would if it were a board mount. Let us know how it works.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it grows. Be sure to put the corks from the most expensive wine in front so they are visible. LOL

That should work just fine. FWIW, I use whole wine corks as a growing medium, in clay pots, for some of my Cattleyas that need the most drainage. Works quite well.

Great idea. I have a Tolumnia mounted on a wine cork and I've used them in the bottom of clay pots. I really like your mount.
