LED Bulb Help needed!
 

I am trying to put together a small terrarium for some of my miniature orchids. I haven't purchased anything yet as i am still in "research mode". I am looking to buy some LED bulbs for the small space but I'd rather not use one with pink or blue light. I have been reading posts and looking at websites but i am more confused now then when i started! Orchids are not cheap and i don't want to kill them using the wrong bulb. So my question to you all is what bulb would you recommend for my situation? Oh the orchids i will be growing all need lower light; for example Lepanthes and Dryadella. Any recommendations? :confused:

It is unlikely that you'll kill orchids by the choice of light as long as you give the appropriate amount of light. So if efficiency doesn't matter, you can use whatever you can find in Walmart or Grocery stores.

What is the dimension of the area? Maybe something like PAR38-type or Ray's SMD LEDs if it is really small area (e.g. less than 2'x2')? Link to Ray's site.

It has slightly better efficacy (91.7lm/W) than other PAR38. But it is pretty low compared to what can be achieved by DIY. It has a bit narrow beam pattern, so you need to place it a little further. At 12", it gives 2540 fc, 425 micomol/m^2/s.

I had actually been considering such a lamp for eexpansion of my indoor grow space and was wondering if it was suitable for indoor growing. Thanks Naoki.

There is a guy in several of the Philly-area orchid societies that grows everything in tanks.

For the low- to medium light level plants, he uses my horizontal vivarium.grow LEDs, which give a white light (with 2 different white chips and supplemental red):

For those needing brighter light, he is having great success adding the Philips Flowering Lamps (white & deep red), which do have a slight pinkish glow:

Ray, would that horizontal light be good in a 18in tall tank? That is probably the size i will go for since it will be my first terrarium.
