HELP - Maxillaria Tenifloria Dying
 

Hi, I had got a single pseudo bulb from a vendor at one of the shows. I came home and put it in a glass of water, just the bottom part. The next day I potted it in sphagnum moss. within two weeks there was a flower about to bloom and something growing on the side too. Then the flower bloomed with an amazing scent. It was prettier than any other flower in the genus I had ever seen (biased opinion probably). Two weeks later the bulb started shriveling, the side growth started turning yellow, but the flower is still fine. I have been watering it twice a week since my apartment has incredibly dry mini climate, all the other orchids require that much. I fertilized it weekly weekly it gets the same light as my Oncidiums. Can you please help. If not able to save the plant I would atleast like to be able to know what I did wrong. Thank you.

I am not really sure what is happening with yours but the first thing I would do is gently remove the moss until you find roots and then determine if they are healthy.

As long as the new growth stays healthy, it should be fine. These grow quite rapidly into a large size. :)

You don't say what kind of roots the old bulb had when you potted it, but if there weren't many, the new growth is taking nutrients from the old one, which may not have enough roots to support itself.

As Leafmite said, if the new growth stays healthy, it will send out its own roots and continue to grow. The color looks okay to me, what I would expect with high light. Can you see any new roots starting on the new growth? That would be a good sign!

The wrinkling on the old bulb means it will become the "storage tank" of water and food for new/future growth. Normal on my Max's.
The yellowing could mean high-end/slightly too much light. If it gets REALLY yellow, move it to a place with less light.

Mine look like this every time it/they finish flowering...like now!

Keep an eye on it but it's what I notice.
I don't believe your's is dying.
