New Orchids Bought/Need Growing Advice
1 Attachment(s)
Hello all Dragon Tamer Here, Yesterday afternoon I bought two orchids called Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' and a compact Cattleya called Mini Yellow, I wanted to know what basic advice you can give me for a good growing culture when growing these orchids? Two have you ever grown 'Mini Yellow' before and what your experience with it? I included a photo of the orchids in attachments, enjoy :)

Two different cultures, oncidium need moist while the cattleya require dryer environment. Cattley will need more light than oncidium. I leave the other members chip in the rest of the advice.

If potting, fine bark and maybe a ball of moss in there for the onc, and coarse bark for the catt. I personally prefer catts on mounts.

Is there a tag with the Cattleya (inside the package)?

C. Mini Yellow is not a registered hybrid. But it likely takes general Cattleya care. Open well draining media (medium bark works well), let dry before watering and fairly high light, but introduce it slowly. Also good moving air for both plants.

Your environment also factors into the care you give them. Are you humid? Arid? Hot all year? Temprate? What growing zone? In house, out doors? What window if indoors?

They look like the Oz version of our US Better-Gro bag babies. The description on the hang tag of the bag (with the photo) is usually just a general idea of what to expect from the plant; the photo is usually just something similar also. Sounds just like your Cattleya's packaging. Sometimes it does specifically identify the contents, as with your Oncidium. If it follows true to our US version, the tag inside the pot will have the proper identification (species or hybrid name and/or cross). You could Google the name there to see what it looks like.
