Coelogyne cristata alba root growth pattern?
 

I got a Coelogyne cristata alba a few weeks ago from a local nursery. I have some Phals, Cattleyas and Vandas, but this is my first Coelogyne.

It's a new division. The newer pseudobulbs are increasingly shrivelled, so today I decided to have a look at the potting and roots. I found that the bottom of the potting mix, bark and packing peanuts (starch-based, from the nursery!!!) was very soggy, and realised that I've clearly been misreading the pseudobulb shrivelling and keeping it too wet in a bad potting mix. Roots are firm and springy/wiry but rather darker brown than I expected. I'm growing indoors in a ssw-facing window with adjustable blinds. (I'm in southern UK) - temps vary currently between 23C in daytime down to 10C at night.

I've repotted it in medium bark with some polystyrene, in a 12-inch pot cut-down to be a lot more shallow.

What I'd really like to know more about is the growth habit of the plant, particularly where and when roots emerge. Will old roots continue growing?

There are a number of people here growing Coelogynes, and I'm not among them. I seem to recall DeaC recommended a site called coelogynes.com

I see some new growth, so that's good - they'll start roots, tho I can't remember at what point in the growth new roots started. Orchids with pbulbs can be remarkably tenacious ;)
