Habenaria dentata flask issue...
 

A flask of Habenaria dentata arrived in the mail and received the "shaken not stirred" handling by USPS. Most of the tubers new growth was damaged and beginning to go to mush, so had to be removed, also many tubers detached from their clusters.

Any idea if the tubers will send up new growth? (most detached tubers still had tips on them)

Have no idea how this specie are.

But I had some flask being "shaken, not stirred" and unfortunatelly I learnt that even small discolor/damage got worse after some days. (Some might have been cold, not only shaken)

Damaged orchids can be a challenge, damaged seedlings can be a really difficult challenge- depends on the kind of damage.

The damage to the new growth was already showing signs of going downhill so I took the highroad and removed it.

I usually can get damaged orchids to pull through fine, though they are normally epiphytes. My experience with tuberous orchid species hasn't involved such damage to new growth before :(

Thanks! I'll need all the luck I can get, luckily a few were just starting to come out of dormancy and were undamaged from the "gentle" trip they took.

As for the post office, this is the first time I've had things come beaten up like this. I've seen boxes damaged but normally the contents were fine :/

Also if anyone has any recommended media for terrestrial seedlings let me know! I'm thinking of using LF sphagnum moss until they start showing signs of recovering. (right now they are still in that container with the lid near one of the heat lamps i have on the tropicals)

Please keep us informed. I have flasks of medusa coming in May and will probably use a sphagnum/seedling mix, similar to the mix I have the parents in.
I would think that the bulbs would grow another shoot in the right conditions.

I will keep everyone posted, hopefully they do send out new growth :( . I did pot 5 of them in a compot using the mix I use for my other terrestrials--3parts soil 1 part chopped tree fern.

I collected my 3 flasks and will only deflask when growth is at least 2 inches tall......but I am willing to experiment with 1 flask - depending on how your experience went.
