Brassavola grandiflora in bloom
 

I got this as noted, but guess it's a variety of nodosa, not sure... I had a nodosa a before but it bloomed in spring/summer... I got this as a nbs seedling a couple years ago and it's its first blooming, and in winter no less (course it's warm here)... supposedly the grandiflora part signifies a larger flower than regular nodosa but i don't think so... if anyone want's to clarify the species/ variety and differences, please go right ahead ;)

Seedlings of Brassavola nodosa, var grandiflora, have been available from Exotic Orchids for a couple of years. I have bloomed one, but I do not have a regular nodosa, so I can't compare sizes.

I have a first blooming nodosa and it is blooming now. Has been for a while and is putting out another 2 blooms. My lip is about 1 1/2 in across. Without pushing back the pedals it is 3 1/2 in across and 3 high. Hope this helps.

Per Kew (and others), B. grandiflora is actually its own species and is not considered a variety of B. nodosa anymore. Brassavola grandiflora Lindl.

As already noted, Brassavola grandiflora is usually accepted as a distinct species now. Brassavola grandiflora is larger in every way than Brassavola nodosa, bigger plant, bigger flowers, but the really distinctive easily seen differences are the much wider and flatter leaves, and almost never more than 3 flowers per inflorescence (while nodosa can be up to 6 or so). Bloom seasons are similar, mostly May to October in northern hemisphere, but either can bloom at any time in cultivation.

Yes, the leaves of nodosa are semi-terete, and pencil like; grandiflora has more open, wider leaves.

I have a Brassavola that was tagged as nodosa, and OB members noticed the foliage, and size of blooms suggested that it was actually grandiflora.

thanks everyone for your input... Well mine definitely has wider leaves just like your sonya (looks great!) and there are three flowers to the inflorescence so thinking it's a grandiflora.

I have several nodosa. The EOM grandifora is the largest I have. It's noticeably bigger.

Interesting that the sepals on u_bata's plant are green but white on Rabbits.
