How cold was it in your area?

sandra_meissnest 02-16-2016 07:56 PM

We we have some cold nights where it was like 48 mid fifties

Was it under the Bougainvillea and is now getting a lot of sun? It looks like that, or it got too cold. Vanilla does not like cold temperatures. It will take quite a bit of sun but not if it goes from shade to sun. Plants accustomed to shade sunburn as easily as people do after spending a long winter indoors.

Yes it was right underneath the bougainvillea and it had just tiny little bit of Sun and then shade most of the day now it's get at least half a day of Sun if not a little bit longer so should I put it in a different location also if its cold what should i do put a blanket over it
Do you know what is the minimum temperature

Leafmite 02-16-2016 09:34 PM

I find that my Vanilla planfolia doesn't like temperatures below sixty ('F) if there is a breeze. If there is no breeze, it is usually okay down to fifty-five ('F) However, even when it dies back, it will grow again from the roots or a new place on the vine. Mine is still small after all these years because, invariably, we get an unanticipated cold night during our summers which knocks it back. :|

The sooner you can move it someplace with warmer nights the better its chance of surviving. The discolored leaves and stem are probably fatally sunburned. They will die. The cold nights will make it harder for the plant to survive this injury.

I would cut off the soft, dead parts and bring the plant into a warmer place at night. Do you have a window that gets a little sun? Your cold nights should soon be over. When nights are reliably over 60 F / 15.5C put it back outside in the shade.

You can move it gradually to more and more sun, but it would be better with some shade during the hottest part of your afternoon, especially during your hot dry season.

Thank you so much guys again for your help I did put up some shade today so let's hope it's going to get better thanks again
Question do I need to fertilize my plant

estación seca 02-17-2016 09:18 PM

You're welcome!

No fertilizer for Vanilla orchids unless it's warm and they're growing. And in general no fertilizer for any damaged plants until it is clear the damage is done happening, and they are starting to recover.
