Max. Zygonisia info...
 

Hello!
I bought this beauty at trader joes about two weeks ago, i was told here that it is Maxillaria Zygonisia "Snowbird". I have never taken care of an orchid of this genius and was looking for some pointers.

It was all bud until a week ago then bloomed.

Its planted in a soil substrate, something i am totally not familiar with at all.

Im looking for info on watering and humidity preferences and what to replant in, substrate and pot type.

Roots look great. I have read a lot of Zygopetalum species grow in decaying leaf litter in cracks between rocks. Typical potting soil is a lot like that. Zygopetalum is one of the genera in your hybrid genus.

I haven't grown this one, but it looks like a lot of people here have. From the maroon search bar at the top, enter Snowbird in the search box. There are a lot of threads. This is what I do when I want to find out about a new orchid.

I have this same plant from trader joes. I have had it a year now and I got it too rebloom. The mix it is in is a peat moss mix it is fine just don't water it as much. I kept mine outside during the summer. When I brought it in I had a spike. Now it looks to be losing some old leaves and I have more new growth on the way.

It plant looks fine roots look good and it is not root bound I would leavery it. Mine is in a peat moss perlite bark mix I made. I water it every 10 days in the WI term time.

These plants like good amount of light and they do enjoy cooler temps. I think being outside in the summer with lots of good light and day and night temps being different helped me get it to rebooom.

Keep it moist but don't over water.

I have never heard of a Maxillaria Zygonisia, though. There is a Zygonisia Snowbird that is a cross between an Aganisia cyanea and Zygopetalum Jumpin Jack. Do you suppose that is this plant?

Yes fishmom, i think that that is pretty much around what it is from what im hearing on here. Im still pretty new to other orchids besides phals.

What kind of fish do you keep?

Ha! I don't keep fish, although I used to. I just like to go fishing when we are out on our boat. We live between the S.F. Bay and the Delta, so I have chances for striped bass, mostly. And I fly-fish for trout when I have the chance.

Ha ha, i was thinking you were a fellow aquarist with interests in plant keeping like me!

Mine is planted in bark mix. I water once or twice a week and try to keep it just damp. I try not to let it get dry dry.
It is in a very small pot for the size of the plant. Not much media in there, mostly roots so it dries pretty quickly.
