my first flask of phalaenopsis Amboinenses seedlings arrived, so happy they didn't die in the post.

was worried theyd get too cold.

am planning on unflasking them later since the agar looks jumbled.

thinking of dunking them in a weak solution of diathane fungicide for a few minutes before potting them in sphagnum well some of em, might put some in chc and some in leca.

they seem quite big.

Congrats on your first deflasking adventure!
They look like very nice flowers.

The thing about having flasks shipped is that sometimes the jumbling of the content is so bad that most plants are severely damaged and die, or take forever to grow up properly.

I hope you find many in good conditions.

Have fun breaking that glass bottle and good luck with the seedligns!

thanks, if I can keep most of them alive I might have a go at flasking.

found the little hammer and glass cutter, just got to find some bowls now.

ive deflasked them, theyre sitting in some fungicide atm.

theres about 25 big ones plus 11 or so smaller ones.

not bad, they look ok hopefully 3 days in the post wont have done them in, that's my job

forgot to ask, do you leave the roots on top of the media or bury them since they were grown in agar?

NYCorchidman 02-04-2016 11:27 AM

They look great! I don't think I see any bruised plants.
Still, dunking them in fungicide is a good idea I think, just in case.

Regarding the potting of the seedlings, I would bury them somewhat since they are quite big.
This way, they will stay moist and experience less shock from going from very high humidity in the agar gel and inside the glass to open air that is much drier.

Also, it keeps the plants stable when you bury them rather than having them just sit on top of the mix.

Good luck!

thanks have potted some up just got to do the rest, they do seem rather large which is nice :)

put a bit loose spaghnum in the pots, but put a couple in chc.

had to dig out another tray and clear lid for the rest, just cleaning them now.

I have a different opinion about the need for fungicides or sterilants for just-deflasked seedlings.

They have been in a sterile environment, so there is no systemic issues, and a dip in fungicide has nothing to kill, and won't last as a preventive treatment, so why bother.

Inoculation with a good probiotic, on the other hand, beefs them up and is a preventive measure.

I'm not sure whether the fungicide was needed or not :)

there does seem to be a lot of debate about if it retards growth as well as the effectiveness against fungus on newly deflasked seedlings.

oh well its done now, just need to keep a good eye on them and try to nurse them along :nailbite:

I agree 100%. I deflask some 15-25 flasks a year, and I never use fungicide. For my approach, see link in previous thread 'Using terrarium to grow seedlings'

That's a nice cross. Let me know if you will be selling any in the future.
