Phalaenopsis Hybrid "Wild White"
3 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I bought this orchid in Sweden the other day. I know it's a Phalaenopsis hybrid and the tag says "Phalaenopsis Wild White", but I cannot find any additional information on this type. I believe it comes from the Netherlands: Veenplant BV Does this mean that it is a hybrid they have made themselves? I will send them an e-mail and ask about it. Has anyone else had a similar orchid? It has a lot of flower buds and I am really looking forward to see it bloom. http://veenplant.jwsdesign.nl/img_products/46263.jpg Kind regards, Hanna |
It isn't a registered hybrid name. That means it may have no meaning whatsoever except as a marketing tool. Veenplant might be using any named or un-named hybrid made by themselves or by someone else. It might be seed raised or it might be a mericlone. It might not even be the same thing all the time, just whatever they can get that matches the type they want. They are the only ones who could tell you, and I doubt they will. Good luck with that.
It makes a pretty display though. Enjoy it for the NoID it is. |
Thank you for the quick and detailed reply! I didn't know the orchid business was such a wild west.
I definitely will! Skickat från min iPhone med Tapatalk |
Looks like a Phal. Timothy Christopher to me based on the size, but we'll never know.

Certainly a beautiful display no matter what the name.

Thanks petdocchild and Paphluvr!
It does look almost exactly like a Phalaenopsis Timothy Christopher. It will be interesting to see what the producer says. |

But yes, it's a bit of a wild west. They can sell named hybrids under a different, commercial tradename, probably because it sounds sexier, or because they can protect that name. They may have done the breeding themselves, but the vast majority of these companies purchase young plants from other companies, and those other companies either import seedlings from breeders in Asia or do the mericloning themselves. Hybrids created by for the mass market generally do not have a proper, RHS registered name, so it's often very difficult to get any info other than the tradename. I got a hybrid Phal some years ago, that was labeled Phalaenopsis Philadelphia. Since it looked very species-like, a dutch OB friend who bought the same one contacted the grower (she is the person I mention above who got a nice reply), who told her that the proper registered name of the cross was Phal Wiganiae, which is a primary hybrid of Phal schilleriana and Phal stuartiana. |
I don't think I have ever seen one with so many blooms, I would have snatched it up as well. I can' wait to see how many it has next year.

It is actually Willd Orchids, not wild.
