Dendrobium Gillieston Jazz 'Steven' x D. (Tosca x Rutherford Starburst) 'Red Wine'
 

This first-bloom seedling of Australian ancestry has been flowering for about a week. It came in a 2.5" / 6.25cm pot in mid December from SVO. It is SVO 6181, Dendrobium Gillieston Jazz 'Steven' x D. (Tosca x Rutherford Starburst) 'Red Wine'. It arrived in spike. The four flowers are about 2" / 5cm in both dimensions. It has a noticeable scent in the daytime when the temperature is over 80 F / 27C. I can smell it from about 6 feet way, even recovering from a head cold. It smells exactly like a

Luden's wild cherry cough drop.

That's unusual I've not seen a dendrobium like it. Scented is a bonus too.

On his Web site, Sunset Valley Orchids, Fred Clarke writes about how far along Australian breeders have gone with their native species. They are supposed to be plants that can take heat and cold, are easy to flower and often fragrant, and bloom when small.

I glanced at Fred's speaking tours for 2016 on his Web site. I don't recall details but I'm pretty sure he's speaking to a number of societies on the eastern side of the Atlantic this year. He might bring plants if asked or pre-ordered; I don't know.

So pretty. It looks like we have some similar tastes. I also got 2 of these Den. I have these same crosses but they are both crossed with something else. Neither of mine is going to bloom any time soon.

These are my first of this type. Have you grown them before? I did ask Fred and he said let dry a bit in winter.

When I was a kid I grew D. farmeri, some D. phal hybrids I can't recall, and a micro mini I haven't seen since. Since last spring is my first venture into other Australian dens.

The flower reminds me of some bulbophyllum I have seen, its a really beautiful dendrobium- never seen it before.

Ah, I love seeing all the beautiful flowers in this forum- when I am bored or have some time alone, I surf this web- reading and looking at flowers and videos :)
