Advice, mounting a dendrobium victoriae-reginae
Hello! :-)
I have recently purchased a small dendrobium victoriae-reginae and I'm interested in mounting it. I live in England and plan to keep it on my south facing windowsill and wondered if anyone has any advice???? |
These like to remain moist, so use sphag on the mount accordingly ;)

Thanks for the reply :) so I guess if I was to mount it, it would require a fair amount of watering? And also mine is pretty small right now, it has two 8" canes which are pretty thin and a small growth, will it be okay to mount?
Have you mounted one yourself? If so do you happen to have any pics, I would love to see it? :) |
Just as a comment, this Den species also does very well potted. Since the canes hang over the side of the pot and unbalance it, I set the pot in a heavy cache pot to keep it from toppling over.

mmmmmm, still un decided whether to mount it or not. Do you stake your canes so that they are up right? Or do you let them flow down?
Very impressive pictures btw! |
It's a matter of personal preference. This plant naturally grows any direction but upwards, and I like to keep natural growth habits since I think it looks better.

Do you hang it in a pot if you let it grow natuarly? I like the sounds of just letting it flow ;)

Mine is also potted, with unstaked canes. At first, when there were few, and smaller canes, it only needed a clay or ceramic cache pot, but now after a few years, the weight of the hanging canes caused it to be difficult to keep upright, so now it is potted directly into a heavier, ceramic orchid pot. If you do decide to grow it potted with unstaked canes, a hanging basket, or pot that can be hung is probably helpful. If not hung, a heavy pot, and grown on a shelf to allow the canes to hang will become necessary when the plant becomes bigger.
Mounting is certainly also a good option. I imagine your climate is a lot more humid than mine, so it may not be as difficult to keep it well watered for you. I'd still recommend to be generous with sphag on the mount if you choose to go that way ;) |
This is the way I grew mine:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...psvu2e0oa4.jpg It is on a 6" raft made from cedar or red wood. I make my own. But, I have seen very similar being sold on line. It's like a vanda basket without the sides. |
^^^ I grow my pendant-types like voyager, except mine is a net pot wrapped in sphag because I don't have the space for wooden baskets. :(
