Looking For A Couple Room Fillers!
My indoor winter space is really coming down to the wire now, and figure I have room for 2 or 3 small to medium sized orchids. I've decided to try some Cattleya alliance plants as they're very under represented in my collection. I'm looking for suggestions of seriously fragrant ones that are reasonably easy to find and won't cost me a car payment for a blooming sized plant. I have a thing for reds, but looks are most definitely secondary. I have a Brassavola 'Little Stars', and being a very early riser I know when it's in bloom as soon as I open my eyes in the morning. And it's at the other end of the house! That's what I'm talking about! I have another separate space allocated for a couple Brassavola species so no need to mention them. Thanks in advance!

I think I have heard Chia Lin is supposed to have quite a good scent and lots of it. However, it is likely not a small to medium plant. I guess you could make room for 1 large plant in that case. I have one that hasn't bloomed yet but it is supposed to be a pretty stunning, almost red bloom.
Jewel Box is lovely but not sure if it has a scent. The one parent is C. aurantiaca which Orchid Wiz says is not fragrant. Have fun shopping, there are lots to choose from! |

I got rid of all the large Cattleyas and have only kept the small ones. The only 'red' one I have is Slc Anne Komine 'Breathless' AM/AOS (C. Chocolate Drop x Slc. Vallezac) but it is a bit larger than the others and I may end up giving it to an OS member that loves red orchids.
Here are a few of my space savers (I have different varieties of some of them): Cattleya aclandiae. If you get a good clone, it is wonderfully and strongly fragrant. It is definitely not red, though. They are easy to grow, small and bloom twice a year. Exotic Orchids of Maui usually has them. Laelia pumila. This one hasn't bloomed for me, yet, but it is said to be fragrant and it is quite small. Cattleya walkeriana. Stays decently small and is fragrant. Al's Orchid Greenhouse has them for $8 C. Mini Purples Being a walkeriana/pumila hybrid, these are a nice size and fragrant. These usually bloom multiple times a year C. dolosa another walkeriana hybrid that stays small and is fragrant Potinara Burana Beauty 'Burana' HCC/AOS small and has fragrant blooms this one blooms around three times a year |
Any of the walkeriana hybrids are relatively common, inexpensive, stay small and are VERY fragrant!!

One of the former Sophronitis'? All or most are vivid red (there is/are var. aurea but not the norm).
I have a couple cernuas, takes up very little space. |
