new phrag orchid - care and advice needed
 

Hi all,
We stumbled across a shop that sold orchids that were not just Phals. For Christmas, the husband bought me two. I'm super excited about them, but know nothing about them!

I'm going to post about each flower in different threads, since the plants may need different care and advice. I hope that's okay; I just thought that might keep things cleaner...

It didn't have any identification tags, so if you know it to ID it, i'm curious!

Attached are some photos of the leaves, bud, and probably most importantly, the roots.
Curiously, it has this moss... incidental? or for keeping in moisture?
I haven't re-potted it or anything yet, but am completely willing to do so. I just wanted opinions before I messed with it.
Would it also prefer a barky-y mixture like Phals?

I think I read they want less sunlight than Phals?
Anyone know how many footcandles or anything is preferred?

Any other care tips are appreciated!

I did forget to ask about humidity and heat. Right now it's winter where I live and we keep the heat about 64*F.
Is this problematic?
Also, it's not particularly humid where I am; if anything it's a bit dry.

First of all what you have is a Paphiopedilum or paph for short. It likes to be moist but not wet. Phrags more moist. I have been putting mine in smaller bark mix with some spagh in it. It's a paph seedling mix I get from Kelly's Korner. You don't want to let it dry to much. It gets very dry here in the winter so mine don't have to much humidity. I have just gotten a new humidifier so now I have one in the kitchen and one in the living room but the over all is still probably no where near 40%.

Yes they mostly take a bit less light than phals and I think your temp is fine. It gets pretty cold in my house at night. Warms up in the day time when the sun is shining.

I would wait to re-pot when it is done blooming and it shows signs of new root growth.

Oh and it's a really cool one, lucky find.

It looks like a Paphiopetalum with some Delenatii x primulinum or similar and they do come in a white like that. Since Paphs are grown from seed, each one is a bit different.

Oh man. I did know it was a Paph! But for some reason I am determined to call it something else. I need a better mnemonic device.
