Cattleya purchased on name
1 Attachment(s)
Hope that this will turn into a continuous thread. Have you ever purchased a plant, simply because the name tickled your fancy?
I have two plants, that fall into this category. The first one, I actually saw in bloom at a show. The plant had poor roots, and was fallen over in the pot, but I could not resist the name = Psycho Bride 'NN'. It is a nice compact yellow, which has been posted on this board before. The second one I bought sight unseen. But, when you come across something named C Persian Glory 'Road to China', and you are part Chinese and married to someone who is part Persian, what choice do you have? |
I must admit I bought the Psycho Bride for it's name :)
I really love the plant now. Not so much for it's blooms but because it survived getting stalled in the mail, had cold damage, grew and bloomed. |
I have never done this with orchids, but I do buy outdoor plants, i.e. daylilies, roses, etc. that I plant in my "memory garden" that have the name of my loved ones that have passed away in them. I.e. I have a daylily Miss Mary Mary that blooms faithfully each year to remind me of a dear high school friend that passed away a few years ago, and so forth. My father died last month and his nickname was "Bud"...that opens a pretty wild field if I want to continue with my tradition. I can't decide if this makes me want to smile or cry some more...
...interesting thread Kim! |
I can't say I have bought any just because of the name although I can see why you got your 'Road to China' one. You were totally justified
I do wonder how some of them got their names tho and what relevance there is to the bloom, if any. Like my C. Fascelis. I don't like the name, it sounds gross. It is a very old cross and I tried to look up the meaning of the word and didn't find a lot. But there sure are some exotic names out there! |
I haven't been able to find it, but I would like Aranda 'Hilda Galistan' since it is named after a relative.
|
I have been thinking about getting a Cattleya bowringiana for the name but the plant gets bigger than I like :(
|
Anyone who gets a Cymbidium 'Little Black Sambo' has to have considered the ramifications of its name......
|
Absolutely! Medusa, Barefoot Mailman, China Dragon, Ports of Paradise, Egyptian Queen, to name a few!!!
