More Winter Blooms

5 Attachment(s)
Several more orchids have bloomed now with more still on the way. These 3 have joined the crowd in the house!

First is C. Orglade's Grand 'Yu Chang Beauty' AM/AOS. It was a regular bloomer until I divided and re-potted it a few years ago. it has sulked ever since, although new growths grew fine. So its nice to see it back in bloom with another new growth half finished as well. I have heard it likes to be pot bound to bloom, and it is. But I will need to re-pot it to a larger pot soon, so I hope that doesn't affect next year's blooms!

This one is Onc. sotoanum 'Lilac Soap'. It has 3 spikes on one growth and the scent is heavenly. It is a grand parent of Sharry Baby and supposedly where Sharry gets the scent from. it does smell similar.

This is Bc. Nakorpathome Silver. I got it as a seedling from Cloud's about 4 years ago. It first bloomed last winter and is on schedule with 2 spikes this year. 3 more buds to open up. It is a fairly compact grower.

Wow!

Yes, Wow!

O. sotoanum was mistakenly called ornithorhynchum for over 100 years until the error was discovered and the correct plant, a cold grower with yellow flowers, recovered its name. That meant the pink-flowered warm-growing plant needed a new name. I have a small seedling with the old, wrong name. Hope someday it looks half as good as yours.

I bought mine as the mislabelled version. There are still lots out there with the wrong name unfortunately. Onc. sotoanum is a grandparent of Sharry Baby and is the reason Sharry Baby smells like it does! I'm not sure, maybe the other parents smell the same. But you can imagine the scent this one emits! I love it and breathe deeply when I walk near it.

Yes, it is scented after a day or so. A bit spicy and not quite as strong as some, but definitely nice floral scent.

Your Onc. sotoanum 'Lilac Soap' looks a lot like a twinkle. My Twinkle is in full bud right now with seven spikes.
It started spiking in June and it is just now going into bud.

True. Onc. sotoanum is a parent of Twinkle. It looks a lot like my Twinkle as well only a larger version. The sotoanum is a medium size plant compared to my compact Twinkle. My Twinkle has been in spike for months also, loaded with them and now starting to show some buds.

Very pretty. I wish my cats would decide to do something.
