I'm branching out from phals
 

I've done a lot of thinking about what orchids to try next. But when it came down to it I just got the coolest looking ones I could find. Which happen to all be Dendrobium.

Besides the one open flower on Precious Pearl...it's just a bunch of buds. So excited for them to open!! Anyway any advice on care and culture would be very welcome! And this may be a really really stupid question but will these lose their leafs? I swear I read somewhere that some Dendrobium do but maybe I'm completely wrong.

I've found a little information on Micro Chip but the rest I'm having trouble with. I know Dendrobium is a huge family of orchids. I was hoping to get more details on culture for these guys. I know with my phals anyway that they are not all created equal.

Most dendrobium are med to high hight, depend on your temp and humidity, water when medium almost dry. I dont grow your particulat species, this is just general dendobium culture I use on my dendrobium.

I torture Dens so I won't/can't advise.

You picked up hybrids so you'll need to look into their parents. If the tags don't say (abcd x opqr) you can try the register.

Started the search for you with:
Dendrobium Precious Pearl (grex is the name)
Seed Parent: D. cruentum
Pollen Parent: D. margaritaceum

My experience with denphals is that they want as much light as poss (short of burning, but they sulk really fast if they don't get enough light!) plenty of water and a low level of fertiliser.

Given that regime, mine are yielding up to 7 flower spikes on an individual cane..

The Microchip is derived from two species that are in the Latouria section of Dendrobiums. Here is something I found that might be helpful:

The first is a formosae type dendrobium, so they'll lose leaves, albeit slowly. Not exactly like nobiles. It will do well in bright light and humid conditions. The last two are latourias and appreciate a bunch of light and heat if you can give it.

If you came to realize that "all phals were not created equal", by coming into the Dendrobium alliance, you have stepped into the genus with the most species and the one with the most variable of cultural requirements! It is essential that you learn the type of the hybrids you have, their names and the species behind them to grow them well.

Thanks everyone! Leafmite that table is very helpful. Just knowing the groups they are in makes it a lot easier. I got them from Seattle Orchid and usually I have a long conversation about culture with the owner but he wasn't there. I do have the parents names on the tags so I'll start looking those up.
