In search of a bright RED Onc.
As the description says, I'm on the hunt for a bright red Oncidium or closely related plant. I'd like a showy display with multiple flowers on the spray.
A little background- 6 months indoors under lights, 6 months outdoors in bright indirect. Indoor temps are normal- high 60s, low 70s in the winter. Summer highs are in the mid 90s but with lots of water and high humidity. My other Oncidiums and Brassidiums don't seem to mind it at all. Looking for BS or NBS. Does anyone know of a retailer who has what I'm looking for? |
Oncidopsis Nelly Isler is a nice red oncidium type (it's an intergeneric with Miltoniopsis)
Oncidium Sharry Baby has red flowers altough depending on the cultivar and the growing conditions it can go to more a dark red. Another I've not seen in person is Oncidium Red Stars ‘Rooster’. Many will be more browns or pinks than reds but those are ones I can think of. Sorry don't know who to get them from in the USA although the first two have been widely available in the past. |
Oip. (Vuyl.) Home Spun Sprite "Sapphire Seduction" and Hwra. Lava Burst are 2 other bright reds. I bought both last spring from a Canadian vendor Forestview Gardens. Paramount in Canada used to always have the Nelly Isler and ship to the U.S. Maybe not till spring is here now. But some of those should be easily accessible in the U.S. as well. I have seen quite a few people post when there Lava Burst is in bloom. Both of mine are in spike now :)

I'm hoping to pick up one of these at the Santa Barbara Orchid Estates open house this weekend.
Miltonidium Bartley Schwarz 'Highland', AM/AOS at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate |
I only just got this one a few weeks ago at a show from Natt's Orchids, but while Kreigerara Raspberry Stars 'Red Hot Moma' isn't entirely bright red it does appear to be nice and vibrant, though I haven't seen it in person...yet.
They're also in stock at Ahtanum Orchids. You should be able to just search the names of these plants and vendors will pop up, then you could inquire here about the vendor. :) Good luck, let us know what you get. |
How about this one? Oncidium Dianne Feinstein 'Red Ruby'. Here is MissOrchidGirl's video about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP_s3-nwdQI

My favorite is the Nelly Isler, too. It is a pink red, but very vibrant.
