Jewel orchids on a windowsill?
 

Would jewel orchids, Anoectochiles, Dossinia, Ludisia, Macodes, do well on an east-facing Alabama kitchen windowsill? Thinking of sending some to friends who want to begin with orchids. They are successful with typical house plants.

I've only grown Ludisia - an east window that gets only early morning sun would be good. I think if it gets sun all morning in summer it would be too much, but I'm far from an expert. Hopefully others will chime in!

Well, Ludisia is "a typical houseplant" widely grown by many people who have no idea it is an orchid. Some of the others are only slightly more delicate. An unshaded east window might need a sheer curtain at times, depends on the situation. I'd say go ahead and create another addict.

It is really great when you find someone who wants to try orchids. I have tried to get many people hooked with a Phal and they do a very good job growing the Phal but they never progress to the second orchid. :(

When I give orchids to people I feel like the vampire Lestat.

I have one growing in southeast window and another growing in south west window.
Southeast is too much light as it get light for long period of time. need shade.

First one is from south east window . too much light the new leaves tend to be a little green. It sits behind a spider plant for shade and seem fine.
The second one from south west window tend to be a bit happier but get considerable less light.
However they still will grow high light make for a lighter color in the leaves.

I have Ludisia on the east facing window that I seem to neglect until I see the flowers....I mixed garden loam soil and orchid media half and half to repot my plant and it is thriving well....

In my opinion jewel orchids are terrarium plants so it is not a good idea, except for the Genus Ludisia of course.
They are really far away from “typical house plants“.

Two comments:

There is no clear line between typical house plants and terrarium plants, and some jewels may be more adaptable than you think. In particular, check out the hybrid jewel orchids.

Growing any plant depends on the conditions you can provide. A windowsill certainly does not rule out a terrarium if that's what it takes.

Yeah, I just realised the state is classified as humid subtropical ( you lucky guys). Its probably gonna work. :scratchhead:
