What,s eating my cattleya flowers?
1 Attachment(s)
Found my cattleya blooms eaten over night.
Any idea of the culprit?, and can I do something about? It is so far the only blooms touched. I moved all my plants to my brand new greenhouse recently. Culprit most have come with the plants. |
Looks like snail or slug damage. They tend to eat long strips as they crawl along the edge. Caterpillars and grasshoppers tend to eat out semicircles as they munch in place, turning their heads, then moving a little to reach a new spot.

First thing to do is look over that orchid look for slime trail to see if maybe there is slug hiding in your bark. Look and feel as sometimes they leave a sticky film behind them. Or a trail that will be clear you need to look on the leaves and flower itself the container and also the bark or moss you would have it in. You can flush your orchid pot hoping it will leave. You can change your bark or grow material hoping not to disturb the bloom.

Thank you for your responses.
I looked around and see no signs or trail. I have given all my orchids a bath of Imiadacloprid in the past. Perhaps I missed that one or is not totally effective. I gave the pot a bath and hope is the only taste meal in my bunch. Thank again. |
Slugs ate some of my flowers this year. I would go out to my growing area first thing in the morning and they would still be the flowers. If it is slugs, don't pick them up with your bare hands, they can carry human pathogens.

I caught a grasshopper chewing on a Catt shoot, and another snackking on a sundew. Swift justice. Crush the thorax and drop them into the pitcher plant. |
Mice love them too. Mice often seek shelter in warm un-visited places over the winter.

Doubt that a mouse made it inside. Brick keen wall, all screened and clean stone floor.
I will keep me eye peel for signs. Thank you. Hope a second feeding does not go on tonight. |
