Hi from Brazil
 

Hi Everybody,

I am very new to growing/caring for orchids. It is something I always wanted to do, but never had the time, or right climate, until now.

I have around thirty orchids or so, most of which were given to me by owners of large properties where the orchids grow wild. 99% of the orchids were growing in trees. I also have three or four store bought orchids.

I've done enough research to care for my orchids. My biggest obstacle to tackle is identifying all of them. Over the next few days I am going to photograph all of them and post here. I hope that with the forum members' help, I can get this done.

I've been reading a lot of the posts here and it seems you are a group of fine people with a lot of knowledge. I look forward to becoming a contributing part of the community.

Welcome. Where are you from, in Brasil?

I am from Phoenix, Arizona, but now live in Sao Paulo state near Sao Carlos. I lived in Minas for a year before moving here.

Welcome to the Orchid Board! Don't forget to look at the Brazilian cactus as well!

I have a few different cacti plants. I collected a lot of different bromelia species also. I collected so many different plants from so many places I visited, it is going to take me a long time to identify everything.

I have been gardening for over twenty years. Living in this climate is the best. I do miss witch hazel and poppies though. Poppies are really tough to grow here. I have tried refrigerating the seeds, but even that doesn't work. Everything else grows like weeds.

Wow, I have recently become a fan of Yerba Mate! I am in the desert SW too and wich I was somewhere more tropical!

Did you try planting them during the coolest season of the year? They are winter annuals in my garden. I can't grow perennial poppies at all, only the annuals.
