Warmer growing dracula and masdevallia
I was wondering if there are any warmer growing dracs and masdies, that can take temps from 20-30°C and a bjt lower humidity, 70%?
|
I have 4 hybrid Masdevallia that have been outside since freeze wasn't an issue. They've seen 36-37C on several occasions, with 30 being normal. Humidity varies from low to oppressive. The plants are allegedly a 'Fuschia Dawn Rolfe', a 'Marguerite' AM/AOS, and a Cheryl Shohan 'Red Hot Mama'. I say allegedly because #4 was supposed to be Golden Gate 'Mary Staal', but after seeing it bloom I'm thinking it's not a Masdevallia at all, but rather a Stelis of some sort.

Thank you! I have seen those hybrida for sale so i will try some

I know for sure Dracula lotax can grow in 70% humidity and possibly Dracula vespertillio but both can definitely grow in those temperatures. For warmer growing masdevallias, floribunda would be a safe bet. I've heard that vietchiana can be grown in those conditions as well.

M. norae and striatella are supposed to be warm growing as well.
I have the former in my hot tank, and it grows nice. Only had it for half a year though. |
Floribunda is a good choice and Masdies from Central America in general. Veitchiana can take the temps, but then flowers are distorted.

Tjanks guys, have enough masdevallia choses now dracula?

Dracula like the higher humidity, and they like to be wet. So that may be an advantage. What you will need is a night time temperature drop of at least 15 but 20 degrees (F) is preferable. So if your temps are 30 then the night time should be 18-21. All of my Dracula experience a short duration of temperatures of 30+ during the hot summer, but the key is to give them the cooler night temperatures. Many of the growers I have talked with raise their Dracula in intermediate temperatures, so that's what I do.

Thanks wil try it. Wil lotax work?

Just remember to give it enough bright indirect light. I raise them in up to 1000 foot candles of light, and a bit more in the Spring. Most will handle this light, in my experience. |
