Hello all!

I'm Colin. I'm from the D.C. suburbs, and am kind of obsessed with pleurothallids and slippers.

I was referred here by Tindomul. Hope to make some friends, learn some stuff, and contribute positively.

Hi Colin and welcome to the board! If you're into pleuros and slippers...boy oh boy...have you come to the right place! :D Are those the only types you grow? We have a varied mix here...some only have 1 or 2 types that have taken over their lives and the rest of us have just totally lost control ;)

No, i have somewhere around about 40-50 plants of various genera and tribes. oncidium tribes, ONE cattleya, vanda, scaphyglottis, epidendroidae, dendrobiums, a sobralia and a thunea, and some other weird stuff. I mostly concentrate my research and future purchases on pleuros at the moment though. Once i've come close to satiating my pleuro fix, i'll move on to getting all those paphs and phrags ive got my sights set on.

Hello and welcome to the OB!! We are neighbors, I live in Arlington, just across the river from DC. You definitely belong here, you remind me of Mahon already. :) We are all crazy freaks in here, at least when it comes to 'chids.

I have about 60-70 plants, all kinds, mostly bastardized hybrids!! (oh no! not that!) :shock: But there are a lot of people here very much into one genera type, or two. And there are plenty of species snobs, lol.

Glad you joined us! :cheer: Now we need some :photo: of your 'chids!!

Thanks all for the welcome. I have to admit, although im no snob, i am pretty focused on the species. The big thing that really draws me to orchids is the evolutionary superiority. I love how all of these 30 some thousand plants have adapted to suit their respective environments, and sometimes, as it seems with pollinators - vice versa! Don't get me wrong - i love (and have) some hybrids for their aesthetic balance, or strategic lack thereof, but species are what really get my orchid-sense all tingly!

as for pictures - itll take a little while, but ill get some stuff up on a gallery. most of my stuff is not in bloom right now, and as i had an involuntary 5 year hiatus from growing - too much moving around - most of my plants are young. do you still want pictures of out of bloom stuff?

I find myself drawn more to species, too. I do have a number of hybrids, but I have a lot of species too. I decided to try to concentrate on them more.

:welcome: Aboard Wogga. Youv'e come to the right place. Sounds like you have a wonderful collection. Some members, like I, are newbies some are experts and have either way less than your counted chids and some have over 500. We are all here to share information and stragies in growing chids.
