What is D. 'sa-nook' ('sanook')?
 

Recently, I bought a Dendrobium hybrid ('sa-nook') because its price was reduced (its flower-spikes had broken), but I have not been able to find adequate growing instructions. It is probably a new hybrid. Does anyone know what this is and how to grow it?

Usually Dendrobiums require more or less the same care. Bright shade and watering 2 - 3 times a week. At least 18 degrees C in the day, and at least 15 at night.

Sa-nook appear to be an orchid seller in The Netherlands. Not sure if this orchid is actually registered as D. Sa-nook or if they just use that name for all their dens. It appears it may be a copyrighted name which does not always match with RHS registered name.

From their website Sa-nook is Dendrobium | sa-nook.nl they appear to sell Dendrobium Phalanthe types (hybrids of Dendrobium biggibum and/or similar dendrobiums, look for care info for Den phalaenopsis, or Den biggibum)

I would't water these as often as 2-3 times a week in the UK, maybe in hotter countries but not in the UK. With mine potted in bark I water about once a week, but check it before watering and if it still seems to damp I might skip a week (or if I remember come back to check it again later in the week).

I find they like their roots to not dry out too much, a little is fine and they don't want to be kept too wet. I tend to grow them a little drier than I probably should, letting them dry between waterings, but try not to let them be dry for long.

Mine like a west to south-west window behind a sheer curtain. I have grown them in full sun before in the summer on the same wall (just outside the window I have them in now). If adapted to that slowly some of them did great with that, but others showed early signs of burning so I moved those in again. I grow them brighter than Phals (which are in east facing windows at home).

They like similar temps to Phals, that is temps that are comfortable for people, so make great house plants. Some other types of Dens I grow cool in the winter, but not these, these stay in the house in the winter.

I grow these in LECA or red lava rock and just water like crazy with regular fertilizing and Cattleya light (South-facing window). I've used clay pots in the past (worked well) and now basket pots. Some of these 'Phal-type' Dendrobiums will bloom most of the year. Never remove the leafless, green canes as they often send out bloom spikes as well. If you use a bark mix, you need to use a small pot so the roots don't rot. The small pot can be set inside a larger clay pot to prevent it from toppling over. As mentioned, they prefer to be kept warm. Good luck!

It does appear that sa-nook is a tradename used for a variety of Dendrobium section Phalaenanthe hybrids. As has been pointed out, care instructions for Dendrobium phalaenopsis types is easily found.

I was looking for that page, I thought I had seen it before on their website and couldn't find it yesterday :blushing:

I have the Polar Fire from them which actually said that on the tag helpfully :) though even that is just a trade name (not registered with RHS).
