Please help identify this mystery NOID - phal, or...?
3 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone!
I am a newbie here and to the world of orchids. I've always been a fan of them, but managed to kill several before this little fella. I don't actually remember where I got him (I usually go for color so I'm thinking he might've been a gift), but he's been with me for a few years now and recently put off two happy flower spikes. The blooms are small, maybe 1" across. Any idea what he is? I don't necessarily need specifics, just a general idea to quell my curiosity and help care for him in the future. Thanks so much! P.S. Forgive the twisting of the blooms, I usually rotate my plants and didn't realize this would affect them negatively! Live and learn... ;) |
Hi, dreamer! Your plant looks to me like a hybrid derived 50% or more from Phalaenopsis pulcherrima, maybe along the lines of Purple Gem (pulch. x equestris), Little Blue Bird (pulch. x (pulch. x violacea)), or similar, but probably impossible to ID by looks. Very pretty whatever it is, and nicely-grown! Welcome to orchidboard. :)

Wow, thanks for the insight! This is very helpful, I really appreciate it. :D
Sad to say, I think the reason it's flourished was because it used to live on a high perch in my bathroom, behind a frosted glass window - I would forget to water it for weeks at a time and I think it lived off the steam from the shower! Poor thing probably thought it was living in the jungle somewhere... Also, bad orchid momma that I am, it's been living in the same sphagnum moss and the same cramped pot that it was originally sold in, and still flowered like this! I'm going to repot it as soon as they fall. Again, thanks so much! |
does look a lot like my phal equestris alba.
|
Yes I can see equestris in it as well. I know you might see it as drab but I see it as beautiful. I want an alba one really bad.
What a nice one you have there. and welcome to the board. |
I see influence from both pulcherrima and equestris in there. Can't give exact id though. Looks very pretty.
|
Thank you, everyone! I do see the similarities in each of the suggestions you gave, some are very close to my little guy and I'm glad to at least have a general idea of what family he's from.
And two more blooms opened up today! :D |
