Got this darling to bloom from an older bulb (cat helped with repotting = one of the new shoots broke off, and that bulb apparently saw fit to spike instead).
Two flowers on this spike, expecting more spikes later, when the new growths mature.

Bought as Bulbophyllum lobbii var. sulawesii from Schwerter this spring.
Faint smell of, well, hard to say. Somewhere between white pepper, fish and stale dishcloth.

Nice!

Not sure about the fragrance but the bloom is cool.

Now that you mention it, the lutfisk we all have come to love does indeed remind me of Bulbo smells.
Which is why I don't eat it of course.

Still, way better than hákarl or stinky flapper at least.

Pretty flower!

Lol, if I buy this one, maybe my hubby likes the smell😂

Not the kinda fragrance you would think a beautiful flower like this would produce😜

Looks like a rambler but nicely grown! Personally,it matters not to me what the fragrance is...just want the things to bloom!

Trollsvans 08-10-2015 02:27 AM

With this genus, fragrance definetly matters!
Or rather, it's effective radius.
With flowers smelling of dog turds to wet dishcloth to decaying corpses and everything in between, these are plants that might end up finishing your marriage off.

That said, most Bulbos are rather harmless with a smell radius of around 20 cm and a "sort of unspecific pungent" odor.
The famous exceptions are the macrobulbon section and B. beccarii, which are said to make people nauseous.

This one is quite the rambler indeed. About 4 cm between each bulb, and a tendency towards branching.
I've fell in love with these "daffodil baskets" for ramblers. There probably is a proper term for it in English, but I've yet to find it.

Seems hard to grow- and smell is described as rotten meat, or actually rotten borneo elephant😎😂

If I ever drag one of these home, I might find myself a new husband at the same time😜

I have to be crazy, cause there is still something inside my head going "one day… one day- then maybe I'll get my hands on one of these"

Nocturnum is also fascinating- only flowering during night, and closing flowers during day.

Havent read anything about smell- but it seems to be a stinky one. But then again: who am I to judge this flower, when you have pretty little pink flowers smelling like rotten elephants😆

Oh, sorry for taking your thread on a tour of topic😎 Norwegian girls, ya know, gets all excited and forget about manners…
