Is NYC upsetting my orchid or am I?
 

I recently moved from the west coast to NYC and brought a few of my orchids with me. This is an oncidium hybrid...It's been humid and hot here, but I hadn't watered in a while...So I watered on arrival and then the aerial roots were looking pretty dry so I watered 3-4 days later.
Now the exposed roots are hallowing and drying up. Did I overwater? It was next to a window and getting more light than usual too. See attached picture... Ok maybe a little air from the cooler too, but the ones not next to the cooler that I watered less than a week apart are also with hallowing roots :( I usually water all my orchids 1x per week in CA and they like that...

Methinks perhaps, that the orchid shut down thinking hard times were coming, a drought or so on. Best thing to do is give it enough sun, water, and allow new roots to form. This may sound silly but I see it all the time. It takes a few weeks for a new state of being to replace the old one. Many people in NYC have amazing orchids, so I doubt it is the city.

Perhaps your plant is sulking because now the light at the end of the tunnel is New Jersey?

NYC water should be very clean. Unless you are living in a building with older piping. I know one person that lives in NYC (by the east village) that strictly uses tap on all plants.

The one thing I can say in favor of NYC is that the tap water is really good stuff. I'm jealous of the sensitive soft water fishes my aquarium friends there breed in their tapwater.

I think a little kelp extract can alleviate stress condition.

Tap water is much better than West Coast, so your plants will be happier here. :)

NYC and its water are indeed amazing... I still dont have a sense of what's happening to the roots in the picture attached above. Any other thoughts?
Also, any recs for local orchid societies to join?
