Hello I'm Brandon. Currently in long beach .65 miles fr the beach. I mostly grow exotic fruit trees and anything strange hahaha. Have had orchids before but have only really had luck with an oncidium in the past.

While at work(trader joes) doing flowers. I noticed the smell of this oncidium and had to have it. It was not tagged but I've figured out its a sharry baby. Then another was going to be thrown away because of a broken flower spike so I took him home too. This one has dark red blooms bigger than sharry baby. So here we go with another plant addiction haha.

Just repotted them out of the soil like media they come with into gublers fine grade mix. From what I've read using this for oncs means I can water to my hearts content haha.
Having trouble figuring out embedding pics on here so I attached them.

They are outside on the deck which gets full sun till about 10:30 am then filtered light the rest off the day.

Since I was in a repotting mood.... I bought a phal for a party and just didn't care because they always die for me. I had left it in the dark living room in the soil it came, which turned out to be all sphagnum.

Just potted him up and put him out behind the oncs for a little protection.

If this orchid growing works out my partner wants me to do an orchid and staghorn wall on the patio. 😝😝😝

Couple notes. 1. Your pot might be too big for your phal. 2. You planted your phal too deep in. Make sure the leaves stays above the medoa to avoid rots.

Other than that. Good job. The oncidium is nice color. I have an oncidium noid as well. I live in LA, maybe we can meet up one day.

Welcome to Orchidboard! Your plants look great. I agree about the phal being too deep and over-potted. He will probably do ok it the pot but pull him out alittle more.

Hello and welcome!
Orchids, like all other plants, require a little research and adaptation to grow. In 'the wild' the ancestors to your big box store Phals grow on trees in very humid, warm environments, their roots bare to the air. The medium basically is there to keep the air around the roots humid. Many of them grow sideways or nearly upside down so that water drains off of them so, in cooler environments, you don't want to let water sit on the leaves or in the middle of the leaves.
Hope this helps. Good luck!
