Establishing Moss in a Terrarium
Hi all,
I am not having great luck with establishing moss on my hygrolon background. I have tried tacking up some clumps of moss as well as grinding some moss and trying to get it to grow with only water. I have read articles like How to Make Moss Graffiti But I am worried about exposing my orchids in the terrarium to buttermilk and sugar. Has anyone tried something like this in a terrarium with orchids already planted? |
I have taken moss from my greenhouse, put it in the blender with sphagnum and water, then spread the slurry on the substrate. Kept constantly moist, it will almost certainly begin to grow in 6- to 8 weeks.

I've had fair success with moss mix on hygrolon.
It's a blend of various dried moss granules in a sphag base. I'd be surprised if Ray doesn't have it. I'd avoid the buttermilk bit. Try mixing with some sphag instead, if that doesn't work, get the mix. |
Similar to Ray's suggestion, I mix a few varieties of moss with distilled water and a dollop of yogurt (for nourishment) and blend it into a paste.
Recently did this with a large vivarium and kept under good lighting and moisture, I already see new growth after ~2 weeks! |
