Sphagnum Hitchhiker
Some months ago I had some Chilean Sphagnum left from a repotting and put it in a little pot to use it later.
Someday a little plant begun to grow and grow and grow. Today, the terete leafs are more than a foot long and the pot is full of roots. Leafs are hollow like chives. The seeds must have been in the moss. It's very unlikely that the seeds came from anywhere else. Does anybody has an idea what it could be ? http://i.imgur.com/umN11EJ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/vr8frFt.jpg |
I had the same plant grow out of my sphagnum moss too. I wonder what it is too. I pulled mine out and threw it away :( it got really big.

Reminds me of some sedges (Cyperaceae) I've seen.

My first thought was it reminds me of my chives in my garden. Probably not that, just what it reminded me of.

I have one of those too, but mine came in a package of NZ sphagnum (or so the label said...). It's sharing a pot with a Phrag Hanne Popow, and by now it's gotten so big, I'm afraid that it's taking all the nutrients I'm adding, and the phrag is starving. When I repot, the invader will be relocated to the garden outdoors - I'll see if it survives the winter.

Mine is in a separate pot so I'll wait till it blooms.
I don't think it's a Cyperaceae as the stem is hollow and not solid. |
Never let something grow (ferns or else) with your chids, they keep the substrate wet, catch nutrients, degrade mix, and ultimately will win other the chid.
Sue Bottom has an article on this on STAUG. Looks like chive yes, if it smells like some garlic it well could be. The seed are rather ubiquitus. :) If so, keep it separated and enjoy for cooking. I know of kinds of rush in Europe looking not far till they reproduce, but they don't smell. |
Looks like a sedge to me too.
