Blooming Hobbyist (apologies) in Auburn AL
Hello everyone!
My name is Ariel, I'm a PhD student at the Auburn University, and my life-long love affair with orchids has finally culminated into a hobby. I've loved Orchids as long as I can remember, but only just started to care for some myself, rather than follow my dad's instructions at home in south Florida. I have bought seven Phalaenopsis plants from my local grocery stores (though I prefer to think of it as "adoption" since they appeared to struggling), two of which are miniatures, , and, very recently, 5 babies of a few genera (Cattleya, Oncidium, and Paphiopedilum). Two things have become clear: this hobby may take a toll on my (nearly inexistent) student stipend, and I truly need advice and assistance from experienced orchid growers. I might be in over my head, but I'm hoping you all might be able to help me! Anyway! :hello :waving and I'm really excited to have found your forum! -x- Ariel |
:waving Welcome to Orchid Board!

Hello and welcome, you will learn much here.

Welcome! :)
Same position here, but only an undergrad. From what you have, find a place for them where they thrive and then branch out to other genera with similar conditions! Your collection will grow, it's only a matter of time! |

Welcome! Try and find a local orchid society to join. Members tend to be very generous to newbies, especially penniless students!

Finally! Another orchid fan in Auburn. Hi Ariel, I also live in auburn. I actually work part time for the university doing IT in the athletic department. You are right about orchids putting a dent in your budget. I am working on the finishing touches on my greenhouse now...I don't even want to know how much I've spent so far lol. It is worth every penny when you see those blooms though! Now we just need to revive auburn's orchid society :). I tried once, but the few people who were left are retired and meet at like 5:30a.m. As much I would've liked I just couldn't make it that early. So OB has been my orchid society for the last few years...well them and my fiancé. I really don't count her though because she only tolerates my orchid obsession (thankfully). |
